Half Time Conference
Jan. 08, 2012
Destination: Unknown has now turned into one of your choosing after the completion of the 2012 Half Time Conference in Stevens Point.
This year the conference was held at a new hotel which posed to be a nice venue to host our large conference with over 360 students in attendance for. Friday night started out with a skit by the state officers with a theme of traveling around Rome remembering to always to take the first step to learn something new or try a new experience. After the skit there were rounds of workshops that focused on one’s personal growth and how to lead by example to fellow FFA members. The night was capped off with a tacky tourist dance followed by reflections put on by the state officers in which students were posed with the question of what legacy will you leave behind?
Saturday morning started off with more rounds of workshops dealing with chapter development. There was also guest speakers who shared with the students there experiences as state officers and had a short program on LEAD. We capped off the day with a short presentation from the Alumni and a challenge from Ethan to advocate for FFA and ag. Ed in ones school.

Ahman Green!!
Dec. 01, 2011
Who would think that a simple picture of a young man with his calf would get a visit by a Packer player to his house? Matt, from New Holstein FFA did just that. He took a picture of his calf dressed as a Packer player with a cheese head on its head and different Packer items in the surrounding. This was the picture that won the overall nationwide contest for the NFL Play 60 contest. Ahman Green, retired running back for the Green Bay Packers, visited Matt’s house outside of Johnsburg on Tuesday.
Once Ahman arrived at the farm he toured Matt’s room to see it all decked out in Packer items then we went out to the barn to show Ahman a small family opperation Dairy Cow farm in Wisconsin. He was amazed to see how the cows were calm and chewed there cud with all of us in the barn. Afterwards Ahman spoke to the group about the Play 60 program on staying fit and active while still eating right. In addition, he told us about his home life, what he is doing in retirement, and about playing for the Packers.
This was a really neat experience for not only Matt, but also the whole New Holstein FFA and me!
Keep taking those pictures of your animals because you never know where it could show up or who could be knocking at your door!

FFA Fun...
Nov. 18, 2011
This past week has been full of fun activities in section nine!
The Green Bay East FFA had their bowling tourney on Tuesday at Willow Creek Lanes. 12 members came out to enjoy a night of bowling, pizza, soda, and fellowship. I was really excited when asked to come join them later after my chapter visit with them. The team I was on did quite well we had lots of fun and joked around.
Kiel FFA had a SAE workshop Thursday night at Kiel High School. Here the students learned about getting started with an SAE, keeping records, and how to fill out the application. Many good questions were asked on what to do and how to win a gold placing at the state level. Afer the workshop was done there was pizza to enjoy made by the FFA, and a few rounds of "Spoons" (its a card game).
Good luck to all hunters this weekend on opening weekend, be safe and get your big buck!

88th ARBA Convention...
Nov. 11, 2011
The 88th American Rabbit Breeders Association National Convention is now in the books! There were over 23,000 rabbits entered between open and youth with many Wisconsin Breeders winning Best of Breeds and Best Opposite of Breeds. My family exhibited 28 animals in which almost all placed in the top 10, racked in many 3rds, took 1st on one class, and took home the 2nd place commercial fur in open! The big winners were Best in Show Open: a white New Zealand and Best in Show Youth: Holland Lop.
This show is the biggest show of the season for the entire rabbit industry in which commercial venders sell products, educational classes are held, youth compete in judging competitions, and exhibitors from across the country and Japan exhibit their animals. In addition, folks meet new friends, reconnect with old friends, play practical jokes on one another, and now how to have a good ol’ time!
For the State of Wisconsin I was a co-coach for the quiz bowl team which did quite well earning 2nd place in their pool. Additional results from the youth are runner up King, Dalton Kelman, 5th place senior judging, Jessica Cotter, 2nd place judging Jacalynn Gumz, District 3 Management, Nichole Willison also with 4th runner-up overall in the Nation! Way to go everyone for a great representation of our youth in Wisconsin. All ready look at breedings for next year’s 89th ARBA Convention in Wichita Kansas, prepping the youth for team competitions, and come up with some new pranks!
Many of the youth that show at these shows are FFA members in which they have strong SAE programs that win numerous awards. Look for those members at your school and congratulate them on a year well done.

Chapter Visits
Oct. 10, 2011
My first chapter visit was at De Pere High School on Monday Oct. 3rd. It was a nice day with an abundance of students all day long, even got to see a few throughout the day. While at De Pere I learned that freshman are very energetic and love to keep busy!
Wednesday, I traveled to Reedsville in the morning where I worked with the wildlife class and the AG Construction class of all guys. This was a great group of guys and played a wicked game of “honey do you love me.” Never knew that guys would have such a hard time holding a straight face! I then headed west to Brillion for the afternoon to work with the AG Business class and 7th grade exploratory class. In ag business we went over ag careers and how agriculture is in every aspect of our daily lives right down to the cars we drive and food we eat. The 7th grade class showed me that they can have even more energy than freshman, but also that 7th graders like to ask tons of questions. Overall it was a great day at both schools.
Thursday, I took the short drive to Chilton where I worked with all high school students. Once again I was awed by the awesome game of “honey do you love me,” especially the wildlife class. The boys in football could not hold a straight face, but a few girls were able to keep a straight face for almost the whole time. I had a nice lunch with some of the chapter officers as well in which we laughed and had a good time.
Monday, I headed up to Green Bay Southwest High School in which the whole school is almost bigger than the entire Kiel School District, so you could say I was like the little fish in the big pond. The students definitely had a lot of energy, maybe partly because of the Packers win last night! Leadership cars were the highlight in which students came up with the most creative mode of transportation to depict leadership traits.
The remainder of the week is filled with chapter visits, but next week I will be at National Convention in Indy!

Week one and two of SLW
Sep. 25, 2011
Our trip around the state started at Amery kicking off the SLW’s in style with a skit from the seas with rowdy pirates. It was a great night capped off with a nice dinner from the Amery FFA chapter. From Amery the team traveled to Fall Creek and to Stratford to finish the first week. The team was graced with the presence of Reilly Pagett, National FFA President, from OK during the first week of travels.
East Troy was the starting point of the second week of SLW travels. Tuesday the team headed over to Sauk Prairie then north to Winneconne on Wednesday. Thursday, the team traveled to Kiel in good ol’ section 9!
We started out our day heading to Whistling Straights getting a tour of the golf course, how the turf is managed, and seeing the roaming sheep! The tour was very interesting seeing the course started as an air base being flat to rolling hills like the landscape in Scotland. From Whistling, we headed to Whispering Orchards for a nice lunch in the orchard. The night at Kiel was nice and boy was I nervous though for my speech being that I lost my voice, but I got through it. Southern Door was the winner of the spirit stick and boy did they deserve it. Friday morning the team went to Hennings Cheese for a tour of the factory and got to sample some different kinds of cheeses. Landon Schaffert, National FFA Secretary from CO, enjoyed this tour as he could taste the cheese.
It’s been a busy two weeks, but we have one more to go and then my schedule is go, go, go with chapter visits and National Convention.

SLW & FIRE
Sep. 08, 2011
Excitement and anticipation can easily describe my past few days as I get ready to travel the great state of Wisconsin putting on leadership workshops in each section of the state. I am excited to meet various members, advisors, see my teammate’s home towns, and visit different businesses in agriculture. The Business and Industry visits will give us the chance to see different aspects of agriculture, along with what each area of the state is strong in. With all of the traveling, anticipation builds within as I love to travel! I don’t often get to the northwestern part of the state and am eager to see what adventures we will part take in.
Monday is the start of our SLW workshops kicking off in style in Amery. The remainder of the week the team scoots down to Fall Creek, and across to Stratford. The second week of SLW we scamper down to East Troy, head west to Sauk Prairie, venture to the good ole’ Winneconne, and end the week at Kiel in the fine section 9! Our third, and final week of starts off in Mineral Point, buzz up to Wisconsin Heights; with our grand finale in Blair-Taylor.
However, our travels do not end with the SLW’s, starting September 24th we start our race at Fox Valley Technical College for the FIRE Conference. We pit stop at UW-River Falls on October 1st and take our final lap at UW-Madison on October 8th. Be sure to catch the team at one of these three great locations for a chance to win the race. See you all at Sectional Leadership Workshops or at FIRE Conference!

Jag Lake and Fair Judging
Aug. 27, 2011
In the northern woods of Wisconsin lies a cabin set on by a lake with an island in reachable swimming or boating distance, with bunks from the barracks from the war time. This camp is home to many FFA chapters throughout the summer creating life long memories and friendships for years to come. Jag Lake is the name of the camp that numerous FFA members have called home for many years and will continue to do so in the years to come.
The state officers just got back from their stay at the camp working on SLW workshops, speeches, FIRE workshops, skits, and chapter visits. However, the whole time was not spent on preparation for the upcoming school year. When we had finished our work or were taking a break one could find people in the lake swimming, attempting to row boat, fishing, reading, studying, or just relaxing by the shore. At one point Isaac, Sara, Ashleigh, and I swam from shore out to the island to explore what was out there. We found a nice little camping spot with a campfire area and many trees providing shade.
We capped off our stay at Jag Lake by taking a small road trip to the UP to see the Paulding Light. I can honestly say I did not know what to expect, but it was a neat experience seeing the red light turn into a bright flashing white light kind of resembling a train charging right at you! Once back at Jag Lake we ate an ice cream sundae out of a rain gutter that was 12 feet long!
Jag Lake was not my only event I had this past week though. Wednesday I went to the Manitowoc County Fair for the afternoon and the large animal auction with my dad. It was nice to see all of the accomplishments and awards of FFA members from my home county.
Thursday, I headed over to Waupaca County to judge the rabbit show. There were some very nice rabbits at the fair and was nice to catch up with some friends I have not seen in a while. The big winners of this fair were an American Sable and a Mini Lop. Market Class was won by two FFA members Bailey with a roaster and Kaley with a meat pen. After the rabbit show was done I headed over to the dairy barn to chat with some of my friends and help them out for awhile. I actually got to lead a cow for the first time in my life! She walked really well until we were on our way back from the milking parlor and she smelled the stack of hay by the barn. She sped up and stopped immediately at the stack of hay and mowed down.
Friday I drove to Gillet to judge the Oconto County fair in which I was surprised at the depth and quality of the rabbits exhibited. Many of the youth were excited to show their rabbits in anticipation of winning a blue ribbon. Mallory was the big winner of the day taking both Best in Show and Reserve in Show with a Californian and Jersey Wollie respectively.
It’s been a long couple of days, but it’s worth it to see the smiles on faces, educate youth on the rabbit industry, and to see some friends. In the coming days I will be working on fine tuning my workshops, gathering supplies, and practicing my speeches before school starts. Upcoming activities: SLW workshops, FIRE, and chapter visits Hope everyone enjoys the last few days of summer vacation, Nicole Petrie WI State FFA Secretary “Unlock the Legacy”
State Fair
Aug. 12, 2011
State Fair…food, competitions, entertainment, and fun are just some highlights of what state fair is about. However, for the state officer team discovery barn, veggie races, and meeting members is more what we have been doing.
In the discovery barn we educate young kids and parents alike on various animals, management procedures, and veterinary practices. Through hands on activities and question and answers we are able to educate the public on farm to fork. With the assistance of numerous FFA chapters and the Discovery Barn staff we are able to achieve this.
When fair goers stop by the veggie races, kids have the opportunity to race vegetables made into race cars down a track to see which one wins. Some selections include potatoes, cucumbers, leek, sweet potatoes, and peppers. While also racing the cars kids learn about vegetables and their importance in eating them daily.
With only two days left of the fair I have yet to eat the famous cream puff! Just have been busy with the Discovery barn, veggie races, and I spent a few days working in the sheep barn as ag staff. The sheep barn was extremely enjoyable to see the faces of the exhibitors when they won, especially the supreme showmanship drive. Now I have a little more time so we shall see if I get time to enjoy a cream puff.
Till next time, Nicole Petrie
Summer Time...County Fairs
Jul. 30, 2011
Summer Time brings county fairs to life across the state of Wisconsin and nation. County fairs show case a variety of events such as various animal exhibits, youth craft projects, tractor pulls, concerts, and the infamous fair food! I usually attend a number of fairs on the eastern side of the state for either enjoyment or to judge rabbits!
This past Thursday I had the pleasure of judging the rabbits at the Outagamie County fair. It was a nice day at the fair seeing many smiling exhibitors, especially the winners. When it came down to picking Best in Show and Reserve in Show it was between the Moat girls and their Netherland Dwarf and their Jersey Woolie. It was a tough decision, but the Jersey Woolie took home the bacon, being the best rabbit at the fair! The sisters will have an interesting year with each other as they remember the nerve racking moments leading up to the big decision, but they are good sports, respect each other, and know there is another fair next year. Once I was done judging I strolled around the fair for awhile, but ended up watching the swine showmanship. The senior division had two tough classes before the final showman was chosen.
Friday, I went down to the Washington County fair to watch the rabbit show and spend some time with many friends. The young girl that won Best in Show at this fair was her first big win ever, but the smile on her face was the best part, priceless! Shortly after the rabbit show was done the poultry auction took place. However, before it got underway there was a clucking competition. Many of the younger kids were impressive with how much they sounded like a real chicken, but the adults took the show. The top two had to have a cluck off to determine the winner! I capped off the night with an amazing concert, Dirks Bentley! Surrounded by friends, and many more people, I enjoyed the music, atmosphere, and some good ole country dancing.
These past two weeks I have been busy prepping for the upcoming school year, but the next few are going to be busier! Monday I head over to Wrightstown for the Golf Outing put on by the Foundation and Wednesday I head down to State Fair. Be sure to stop by the Discovery Barn to check out the animals and fun facts as well as the Family Farm and Learning Tent to see some speedy veggies race down the race track!
Till next time, Nicole Petrie
