Some Food For Thought
Jan. 19, 2012
Here's some food for thought Wisconsin FFA...
Did you know that in the past 50 years the world's population has doubled! Or that U.S. farmers support 24 million jobs. That is more than the entire population of the country of Australia! 41.56%, that is the amount of the world's corn produced by the United States. This is more than China, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, India, and the European Union combined.
Check out this "Some Food for Thought" video to learn more about the advancements in agriculture.
http://bcove.me/3nozau3n
Use this video to promote agriculture during FFA Week. Show it on your school T.V. Stations, during Ag Olympics or pep rallies, use it as a break in classes or in the middle of upcoming FFA meetings.
After watching the video and learning of the great things agriculture is doing, write a thank you to a farmer or agriculturalist in your area. Ag Supporter Appreciation Day is wonderful way to say thanks to farmers and supporters in our communities. Plan it as an FFA Week event, and you are set to go!

OF Alumni and Chapter Visit
Jan. 17, 2012
Well winter has finally arrived in great display! I certainly love all this white stuff, but the chilly temperatures are just a bit overwhelming. Let’s just hope that we don’t get too much snow and continue on this easy winter weather.
While I haven’t had the chance to take in these great sledding conditions, I did have the opportunity to travel north to Oconto Falls for their Alumni Banquet this past Sunday. Greeted by some high school and middle school FFA members, the night started off with a fantastic walleye and chicken meal. Coming from a fishing town (Winneconne), the fish dinner was a great highlight of the night. After the meal was completed, Amy Zernicke, Section Eight Alumni Representative, gave a greeting and spoke of all the exciting events that will be happening at this year’s Alumni Convention. Other things discussed were scholarships and the change of place and date for the Section Eight Alumni Meeting. Next I gave a few words on the importance the support and dedication of our FFA Alumni’s has on local FFA Chapters.
The excitement of the night was up next with presentations by the middle and high school FFA members. One brave soul, Hannah, faced her fears and presented the FFA Creed to the crowd. She recited word after word with such clarity, that the crowd was left awe struck at her completion. High School Officers got the crowd really thinking during a game of Password. Each activity that the alumni supported the chapter was mixed into a jumble of clue words. I was amazed on all the dedication that this alumni has for its high school and middle school FFA members!! Congratulations and thank you Oconto Falls Alumni for your unwavering support for agricultural education.
Overnighting in Oconto Falls, I returned to Washington Middle School, Monday to present to Mr. Iverson’s seventh and eighth grade classes. We did many activities such as jeopardy, agriculture crossword, and leadership cars to understand how FFA and agriculture are all connected and help us to develop into leaders. Thank you to the Senn Family for hosting me and being a very welcoming family.
Upcoming Events: Winneconne Alumni Meeting, January 18th; District Speaking Contest, Tigerton, January 23rd; District Speaking Contest, Winneconne, January 26th; District Speaking Contest, Seymour, January 30th.

SAE Highlight: Black Bears
Jan. 05, 2012
While at Suring for a chapter visit, I had the chance to meet with some pretty cool students. We talked a lot about SAE's and their projects, because every student has an SAE project. One student's project caught my attention rather quickly, because it is raising and caring for two Black Bears. Read Pat's story below:
Name: Pat Gauthier Hometown: Suring
What is your SAE project and the size of the project: I raise and take care of two black bear. We keep the bear at my Grandma's house and take care of them there. We have two sows (female) bear. Our oldest bear named Babes is in her 30's, which is really old for bear. The second bear we have named Betsy is around 15 years old, and is the offspring of Babes. At one point we had six bear not including cubs. When we had our 600 pound boar we would usually have cubs every year.
How did you get involved: Raising Black Bear has been apart of my family ever since I was born. My Grandpa got a black bear game farm license a while ago. After he passed away, we've kept the bears in the family.
What do you do for your SAE: We have to make sure the bear are fed everyday. Once a week we go in the pens and scrape them down, then go over them with a pressure washer. Bear eat almost anything. We feed them corn, cut grass, restaurant scraps, fish and animal carcasses. Every fall before the bear go into hibernation their dens need to be packed with straw to keep them warm. If the bear have cubs we have to go into these dens and get them out before the the mother awakes from hibernation. You have to do this because male bears have a dominance trait and will try to kill cubs so they can mate with the females when they get in heat. We would keep these cubs in our house and bottle feed them until they got too old and would move them to a pen.
What do you think the future of your SAE project is: I someday want a career in forestry or wildlife management and to attend a 4 year college involving natural resources. I also want to continue raising bear throughout my life. Anything else you would like to share about your project: Raising bear is a real fun thing to do, you learn a lot about the animal want you can watch them up close.

New Year's 2012
Dec. 29, 2011
Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. - Henry Ward Beecher
A new year is just around the corner, which means many of us out there will be writing New Year's resolutions. Did you every wonder how people starting this tradition?
The tradition of the New Year's Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar.
With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year for good fortune. They believed Janus at the stroke of midnight look back on the evils of the year past and forward to the fortunes that wait.
Throughout the years our traditions world wide have changed, but no matter where you are the new year signifies a chance to start over, to reach your goals, and to accomplish all that you want to.
Set your resolutions high for this next year. We have 365 days to complete them! Write them down and get started. Oh and good luck!! See you in the New Year :)
Toodles,
Stacey
