Mauston Donkey Basketball
Mar. 09, 2010

Friday Leah and I ventured up to Mauston for their Donkey Basketball Tournament. It featured the Teachers versus the Business People in the first game, and the second game the FFA members versus the Athletes. The championship game was between the FFA members and the Teachers.

It was a great tournament all around! There was a Kiss the Donkey Contest between games, and somehow the contestants were Leah, Mauston’s FFA President Ethan Giebel, and myself! It was a great night. I was lucky enough to have one of the famous Mauston FFA shakes from their shake machine. The turnout was awesome; they pre-sold over 400 tickets and sold a lot more at the door!

Thank you so much for inviting Leah and I to the tournament it was a great night filled with lots of laughs :)

Fabulous Farm Forum
Mar. 04, 2010

his past weekend the team and I ended a wonderful FFA Week at the Farm Bureau Farm Forum Conference. It was an opportunity for high school students to come and learn about different career choices in the area of agriculture.

Members had the opportunity to attend workshops that ranged from media and advertising to misconceptions about agriculture and careers in agriculture. After the workshops on Friday we were treated to a Discussion Meet demonstration, and after that a dance! Through out the weekend at the different meals we had some great speakers such as Mr. Steve Boe and Ms. Amy Sue Vruwink, both great advocates for agriculture.

Thank you so much to the Wisconsin Farm Bureau for hosting this conference for FFA members. We appreciate your continued support for the future of agriculture.

LOL- Lead Out Loud
Feb. 26, 2010

This week marks National FFA Week, a time when FFA members across the nation celebrate the wonderful organization that is FFA, its rich history, and over half a million members. This week we Lead Out Loud!

FFA members are the leaders of tomorrow. In 2010 members have taken Lead Out Loud to a new level. From the most vocal member in the chapter to the newest member in the chapter who might not be quite sure why they joined FFA, each person has the ability to lead. Leading Out Loud can be volunteering in the community, using the leadership skills developed in the FFA, or even taking that extra time to have a conversation with an FFA member or simply someone who looks like they could use their day brightened.

I hope everyone had a wonderful and successful FFA week! :)

2010 State FFA Alumni Convention
Feb. 16, 2010

On Friday, the team convoyed up to Manitowoc for the 2010 State FFA Alumni Convention. Friday night we helped with the live auction, where the 2008-2009 State Officer Team painted saw were auctioned off and made quite a bit of money!

With the Saturday sun came Sectional Alumni meetings and the business session. This year marked the first year in a long time when there were two candidates for state vice-president. Congratulations to Mr. Jim Check from Milton for being elected to the position! That afternoon the team put on two different children’s workshops, teaching children about ear notching, the food pyramid, and communication. The banquet was also that evening, and we put on a reflections program for the alumni members before we ate. It definitely got some laughs, but also got them thinking :)

After this weekend, the entire team is officially lifetime FFA Alumni members. Thank you to Sections Eight and Nine for putting on an amazing convention, and also the entire Wisconsin FFA Alumni for their continued support :)

A Day in the Capitol City
Feb. 16, 2010

Thursday the team and other state officers from all of the Career and Technical Student Organizations met in Madison at the state capitol for Legislative Day. We divided into groups and met with senator and representative from our home areas. Each officer was given the opportunity to promote the importance of their respective student organization in the lives of students, as well as the difference we can make as state officers.

The most exciting part of the day was when our state officer team was able to watch Governor Doyle sign law AB-236, that allows Agricultural Education courses that meet science requirements to be counted for a high school graduation science credit.

This day was amazing meeting state officers from other organizations across the state and seeing history in the making! It was a great day in the capitol city :)

Wednesday night marked the end of district speaking contests for Section 6. It was the District 16 contest in Berlin. The contest began and it went wonderfully! It was a lot of fun :) The best part of the night was seeing all of the FFA members, catching up with them and meeting new members too! Donkey Basketball
Jan. 27, 2010

Has anyone ever seen a game of donkey basketball? It is probably the funniest thing I have ever seen! Sunday the Portage FFA Alumni held their bi-annual Donkey Basketball Tournament.

The games began with the FFA members playing against the High School teachers, and in the end the FFA members were victorious! In between games, the FFA members gave donkey rides to children that attended. The next game featured the FFA Alumni versus the Junior High and Elementary School Teachers. The alumni pulled through to head into the Championship game!

This year, the Donkey Basketball Champion was the Portage FFA Alumni Team! Congratulations, and thank you for inviting me to this hilarious event :)

Adams-Friendship Lock-In!
Jan. 27, 2010

Last Friday was the Adams-Friendship FFA Chapter annual Lock-In for middle school students. Even though it got over early because of the incoming bad weather, the night was a BLAST!

We started out with two round of workshops presented by the high school students about communication, teamwork, problem solving, goals, and other related topics. After that the middle school students had the opportunity to come to my workshop and learn about the FFA Motto… Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve through some fun activities!

Then it was time for the famous Ag Olympics :) Oh boy, was that a workout! We threw hay bales, lifted sacks of corn, chugged some milk, ate cream puffs and cow pies (pudding and oatmeal :), and an obstacle course. After doughnuts and soda we played an epic game of DODGEBALL!!! When the final ball was thrown, it was time to head home so we could beat the freezing rain.

Thank you to the Adams-Friendship FFA for inviting me to such an awesome event!

San Francisco-City by the Bay
Jan. 19, 2010

Last Tuesday the team and I left for five days of some fun in the sun and tours of historical events and places in San Francisco!!

After getting to the Madison airport around 4:30 (thanks to BJ’s mom Kathy and Mr. Talford for driving us there that early :), we arrived in San Francisco around noon. The fun and endless information began then and didn’t stop until we made it home on Saturday!

The first things we did in San Francisco was get transportation passes so we had the opportunity to travel around the city by trolley, cable car, and bus with only one pass! We saw amazing places from Chinatown to Alcatraz, toured museums and the giant redwood trees in Muir Woods, and explored the shops along Fisherman’s Warf and of course the beach!

My favorite part of the trip was a toss up between seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, and just being able to be close to the ocean whether it was being at the beach or traveling on ferries across the bay.

This trip was a great way to get ready to make the second half of the year just as successful and memorable as the first half!

Have a good last week of the semester :)

Oh The Places You Will Go!
Jan. 12, 2010

The 2010 Half-Time Conference began with a bang last Friday. Members from across the state came to experience the wonders of “Oh the Places You Will Go!”

From Seussville skits and decorations to reflections after an amazing dance, the enthusiasm could be seen on the faces of everyone. Everyone participated in the workshops to make this Half-Time a true learning experience that was fun too! The end of the conference brought us an incredible speech from BJ Chrisler, and a recap video that had everyone‘s attention captivated!

Congratulations on a record attendance for the 2010 Half-Time Conference! I hope everyone had an awesome time.

Tune in towards the end of the week for stories of the team’s trip to San Francisco :)

Snapple Real Facts
Jan. 05, 2010

There is nothing I love better in the summer than an ice cold Snapple! Maybe it’s the variety of flavors that I love so much, or it’s the awesome facts that are under the cap. So I thought it would be fun to share a couple Snapple Real Facts once a week.

Snapple Real Fact # 35
Elephants sleep only 2 hours a day!

Snapple Real Fact #10
Mosquitoes are attracted to people who just ate bananas.

Happy New Year FFA!
Jan. 03, 2010

Hey everyone!

Happy 2010! It’s the start of a new year, and a new decade for all. So many exciting events and opportunities are coming up for FFA: speaking contests, career development events, degree and proficiency applications, and countless others. If you haven’t participated in one of these before, try it. You might surprise yourself as to how much you like one of the events:)

Since the beginning of the school year we have aspired to what we want to accomplish in the FFA. We have begun to act on those aspirations. It is still important that we keep acting on them, so that we have the opportunity to begin achieving them as State Convention approaches.

I hope everyone has a great start to the New Year!
:) Caitlin
